Since Santa Cruz is a beach resort, this is peak season there, so hotels will be asking their highest prices of the year.

At hotels.priceline.com they offer 3 places for under $120

(before tax, I'm sure), and two of them are under $100.

Normally that would be a room for 2 people, but if it has

2 Queen beds, you could probably squeeze in all 4 people.

And if you try the "Name your own price" deal there,

where you don't get to pick the hotel, you can probably

get a pretty good deal well within your price range.

I have used that with great success in several cities,

but usually not at peak season, I must say.

You might also be able to stay in a dorm at

UC Santa Cruz, if there is space available.

(The rooms are primarily for conference attendees,

but you never know.)

Well, the hotels and motels aren't "overpriced" or they wouldn't stay in business. Santa Cruz is a desirable place to visit, so prices are higher.

If your father is in the hospital, contact the social services department at the hospital and ask them if there are any "family" rooms for rent. Hotels sometimes donate rooms for that purpose.
