It should do a pretty wide search, so it might find a few places on the outskirts that are below your limit.

Try Roadway inn or Econolodge. Avoid weekends. The monday through Friday prices are much MUCH lower, like $50 a night.
Unfortunately, it's high season, so all places raise their prices.
You might consider staying outside of Santa Cruz proper.

I cant believe you cant find something for less than that. Perhaps you are looking for five star at a two star price. I lived in Santa Cruz for a year. There are some areas of town where you should be able to get a deal. Make sure you catch a show at the Catalyst.
